Meetings
General ESA Meetings are informal and informative, with an emphasis on epi culture. Admission and parking are free. Refreshments are served. Members and guests attending their first meeting receive a free, potted epi Plants, cuttings and potting supplies are available for bargain prices at the sale and raffle tables. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, (except January and December,) at 7:30 pm, in the Lecture Hall B of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden (Arboretum of Los Angeles County, 301 North Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA. From the Foothill Freeway (1-210), take the Baldwin Avenue off ramp south, and follow the signs to the Arboretum.
 
At 6:00 p.m. in the same room and just preceding the General Meetings the Executive Board meetings are held. The Board Members are encouraged to attend these meetings, which are open to all.

  • March 2010 - program to be announced
  • April 2010 - In conjunction in a year long celebration of ESA's 70th Anniversary, hybridizer Gerry Mattijetz will be the guest speaker on Tuesday, April 6 meeting at 7:30 PM. This is Gerry's 1st appearance in over 10 years. He is known for his quirky names and distinct flowers such as Neon Smile, Dragonheart, Master of Mars, Katie's Sweet Kisses, and Party Animal. Gerry has over 50 registered hybrids. Everyone is welcome. 1st time attendees will be given a rooted cutting.
  • May 2010 - As we continue our year long 70th Anniversary celebration , May featured speaker will be Myron Kimnach, director emeritus of the Huntington Botanical Gardens and past editor of the Cactus & Succulent Journal & Hazeltonia Magazine. He has authored numerous articles and a favorite speaker among the lecture circuit. Mr Kimnach will be showing slides of epiphytic cacti from his trips from Mexico to Latin America. All are welcome & refreshment will be serve. 1st time attendees will be given a rooted cutting.
  • June 2010 - Awards presentation
  • July 2010 -As we continue our year long 70th Anniversary celebration , Frank McDonough is the ‘Botanical Information Consultant’ for the L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic where he finds answers to questions from the public, business and government. He will be giving a talk on Epiphyllum viruses, tissue culture, and he’ll reveal a technique for increasing cactus growth. All are welcome & refreshment will be serve. 1st time attendees will be given a rooted cutting.     
  • August 2010 - program to be announced
  • September 2010 - The Annual ESA Silent Auction Fundraiser is set for Tuesday, Sept 7, 7:30 PM, meeting at the L.A. Arboretum. Besides a slide show of the latest hybrids of Evelyn Shiraki, Darryll Miyamoto, & Don Burnett, members and guests will have the opportunity to bid on their favorite cuttings. For the very 1st time, we will offer the newest creations of hybridizer, Derek Obayashi. Rarely circulated epies, small epies, epiphytic species, bright yellows, and other newly registrations by ESA members will also be featured. Another 1st!!! A panel discussion on " Hybridizing 101," consisting of Evelyn, Don, & Galen Pittman, will follow right after the slide presentation. Come early and preview the offerings. All you wanted to know about hybridizing and raising your seedlings, but was afraid to asked. Refreshments will be serve and 1st time attendees will receive a rooted cutting. Shows/Other Events
The highlight of the epi year is the Annual Flower Show and Sale, held in May and open for viewing to the public. Here the members show and compete for ribbons and trophies with their beautiful epies at the height of the flowering season. Annual Events include the LA Garden Show at the Arboretum (4/29/10-5/2/10) and Spring Garden Show at South Coast Plaza in Coast Mesa, CA. Other annual events include the New Registrations Slide Presentation & Silent Auction (a very popular event at the September meeting), and the December Holiday and Awards Banquet.

  • ESA Annual Flower Show and Sale - Location: Ayres Hall, Los Angeles County Arboretum, (Baldwin Avenue south from 210 Freeway), Arcadia. Show and Sale Date: Sunday, May 16, 2010 .
  • The Annual Holiday Banquet - Location: Monrovian Family Restaurant, 543 Myrtle Ave, Monrovia Ca. , (Myrtle Avenue north from 210 Freeway), . Date: Tuesday, Dec 1, 2009. We will start at 6 pm and dinner will be at 7 pm. The cost is $20, last day to make reservations is Nov. 26th. Please make checks out to ESA .There will be a gift exchange!
