Meetings
General ESA Meetings are informal and informative, with an emphasis on epi culture. Admission and parking are free. Refreshments are served. Members and guests attending their first meeting receive a free, potted epi Plants, cuttings and potting supplies are available for bargain prices at the sale and raffle tables. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month, (except January and December,) at 7:30 pm, in the Lecture Hall B of the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden (Arboretum of Los Angeles County, 301 North Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia, CA. From the Foothill Freeway (1-210), take the Baldwin Avenue off ramp south, and follow the signs to the Arboretum.
 
At 6:00 p.m. in the same room and just preceding the General Meetings the Executive Board meetings are held. The Board Members are encouraged to attend these meetings, which are open to all.
 
Upcoming meetings:
  • January 2014 - CSSA DAY AT THE HUNTINGTON: The Cactus and Succulent Society of America's annual Desert Forum will be held Saturday, Jan 18, 2014 at the Huntington Botanic Gardens and Library. It's free admission to CSSA members and members of CSSA Affiliated Clubs to which the ESA, South Bay, San Diego, and San Francisco Epiphyllum Societies belong. Bring your membership card, badges, or roster to show you are a member of the ESA. If you bring a guest, they will be charge the regular admission. Registration is from 9:30 AM to 10 AM. Knowledgeable staff member will be stationed throughout the Desert Gardens and Desert Conservatory. You may bring a sack lunch with you. Write your name on the bag, and they will store it for you. Lunch is from 12 noon to 1 P.M. at Friendship Hall. The Desert Nursery will be open from 1 to 3 for sales to members only. Cash, Checks, and Credit Cards are accepted. Please note there is no formal itinerary, and you are more than welcome to visit any other gardens or exhibits at your leisure. Aloes, Hong Kong Orchid Trees, Asiatic Magnolias, Iceland Poppies, and Camellias are all in bloom during the month of January, and Art Galleries are changing all the time.   • February 2014 - Happy New Year everyone!!! This months program is called "Highlights from the Pentico Collection", it consists of photographs from the Pentico collection over the last three years of photos taken by Robert Kuettle. The program will be given by either Robert Kuettle or Galen Pittman
  • March 2014 - A presentation on growing epis by Galen Pittman
  • April 2014 - A powerpoint presentation of Epi Parents and their Offspring, presented by Paul Richter Everyone is welcome. 1st time attendees will be given a rooted cutting.
  • May 2013 - Preparing for our May 19 Flower Show and Exhibition will be lead by former President Keith Ballard with the "do's and don'ts" on getting ready for our annual competition. A powerpoint presentation of the 2012 San Diego Epiphyllum Show, and a looked back at our own 2012 Flower Show will complete the evening.   • June 2013 - Paul Richter currently the Webmaster of the ESA Website and a member for 7 years, will give a talk on the ESA Website and its many features. Presentation of awards from our Flower Show and Exhibition will precede the program.
  • July 2013 - Paul Richter will show the ESA 2013 Flower Show on power point. All are welcome & refreshments will be serve. 1st time attendees will be given a rooted cutting.
  • August 2013 - Paul Richter will show the ESA 2008 Flower Show on power point and he will show pictures of epi's from his back yard.
  • September 2013- Our annual Silent Auction is the main agenda for the month of September. Bid on the latest and recent hybrids, one of a kind from Evelyn Shiraki, Daryl Miyamoto, Don Burnett, Richard Klug, Don Burnett, Jim Nones, and Paul Richter. Moreover, epi cuttings from the Pentico collection will be offered for the highest bidder. For other members who wish to expand their garden collection, there will be orchids, plumerias, books, and garden related items such as wind chimes, pots, etc. Members are encourage to donate for the auction as well. The video program will be Ken Loomis's "Kaleidoscope of Epies," of his own collection, and photos of epi show he attended this year. Paul will be previewing his epi donation. There be lots of time for socialization with food and getting to know new members or just catching up with old friends. Be there or be square!   • October 2013 - A chance of pace for our Tuesday, Oct 1 meeting. An introductory, digital program on irises, both bearded and beardless will be presented by Jill Bonino, a Board member from The American Iris Society. It will include growing instruction and pictures of irises that grows well in Southern CA. She will be bringing catalogs, information on the AIS, and some plants to give away as door prizes. Jill has been a member of the AIS since 1996, Board member of San Fernando Valley Iris Society, and Southern CA Iris Society. A judge since 2007 for the AIS, Jill has been taking pictures of iris gardens throughout the U.S., France, England, and Italy, and has been giving programs to iris and garden clubs throughout CA. All are welcome & refreshment will be serve. 1st time attendees will be given a rooted cutting.
  • November 2013 - Currently the most requested yellow epi from all collectors is Darrell Miyamoto's hybrid "Yellow Tang." A rare combination of a bright yellow and multi-petal. Moreover, the winner of Best Flower for 2 year in a row in our Annual Flower Show. Rainbow Gardens Nursery can't keep up with the demand and selling out within a few days after the word is out that they have it in stock. For our Tuesday, November 5 meeting, the topic will be yellow epiphyllum in its short history of availability of 60 years presented by ESA President Galen Pittman. He will certainly add little known back stories of this collection along with his insights and expertise. A meeting not to be missed. Thanks to San Diego Epiphyllum Society's Librarian, Linda Sinkovic for sharing this Pointpoint presentation. This is the last of lecture series for 2013. Anyone and everyone is invited to submit to any board members for garden related subject matter to consider for next year's lectures.   • December 2013 - Holiday and Awards Banquet
Shows/Other Events
The highlight of the epi year is the Annual Flower Show and Sale, held in May and open for viewing to the public. Here the members show and compete for ribbons and trophies with their beautiful epies at the height of the flowering season. Annual Events include the LA Garden Show at the Arboretum and Spring Garden Show at South Coast Plaza in Coast Mesa(4/25/14-4/27/14), CA. Other annual events include the New Registrations Slide Presentation & Silent Auction (a very popular event at the September meeting), and the December Holiday and Awards Banquet.

  • The Annual Holiday Banquet - Location: Monrovian Family Restaurant, 543 Myrtle Ave, Monrovia Ca. , (Myrtle Avenue north from 210 Freeway), . Date: Tuesday, Dec 3, 2013. We will start at 6 pm and dinner will be at 7 pm. The cost is $20, last day to make reservations is Nov. 26th. Please make checks out to ESA .There will be a gift exchange!

  • San Francisco Epiphyllum Society Annual Flower Show Will be held In San Francisco this Year on May 24, 2014 from 9:30 am till 3:30 pm at Hall of Flowers in San Francisco Golden Gate Park(9th and Lincoln).
