The Directory is the tangible result of 60 plus years of work by the members of the Epiphyllum of America. The (ESA) has the distinction of having been appointed International Registration Authority (IRA) for epi hybrids by the International Society of Horticultural Scientists. As IRA, the (ESA) is responsible for registering epi hybrids and establishing their names, and publishing the international register, Directory of Species and Hybrids. The 1996 4th edition contains more than 7,000 epi flower names, descriptions and vital data for epi flowers that have been registered by the ESA. The Species Section lists was compiled by Myron Kimnach, an internationally respected taxonomist, editor of the Journal of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America, and Director Emeritus of the Huntington Botanical Gardens. Every cactus species known to be epiphytic is included, making it an indispensable reference source for botanist and the hobbyist, alike. Each year, the latest flower registrations are published in an Addendum to The Directory and distributed with the December issue of The Bulletin. The Addenda update The Directory between editions. Only ESA Members receive them as a benefit of membership. One of the original goals of the Directory, which is still a goal today, is to eliminate more than one variety with the same name. The name Directory is a throwback to 1960, when it also listed which Epi nursery had a given named plant. The next edition will be called the "Register".
